Russell made his F1 debut with Williams in 2019, arriving with the same dual F3/F2 title pedigree that Leclerc and Piastri share. After three seasons earning points in a back-of-the-grid car, his promotion to Mercedes in 2022 brought regular podiums and his first Grand Prix win.
The 2025 season was his strongest yet, with two race wins and the de facto team leader role that came with Hamilton's departure. Russell takes that leadership into 2026 on a multi-year extension, widely considered the favourite to spearhead a Mercedes return to title contention under the new ruleset.
